U.S. police arrested a man who called people pretending to be an ambassador of the Dominican Republic. The man is accused of conning a New York state senator and the senator's constituents into giving him $11,500 to buy emergency and utility vehicles and to ship vehicles to Santo Domingo.
According to the Frederick Police Department, Francisco Alberto Calcano, 42, of the 100 block of Willowdale Drive has been charged with fraud, theft over $10,000 and theft scheme.
The alleged fraud occurred from Dec. 30 through Jan. 3, police said. Calcano was being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on Thursday awaiting extradition to New York City, police said.
