Dominican Republic should improve its structures to seismic hazards

Dominican and foreign experts who gathered in Santiago de los Caballeros to discuss the effects of earthquakes in Latin America highlighted the importance of strengthening the physical structures of the region and educating the population effectively.

The meeting was attended by seismologists and academics from United States, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Experts said the greatest concern is the fragility of many buildings in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, so it is necessary to carry out effective public campaign on how to prevent damage if an earthquake occurs.
