Gunmen kill bodyguard of Dominican Republic’s Antinarcotics czar

Unidentified gunmen fired several times and killed Alejandro Vásquez, one of the bodyguards of Marino Vinicio Castillo, the Presidency’s Narcotics Adviser, in a confusing incident in the sprawling barrio of Cristo Rey Thursday morning.

The victim, who resided in the northern subdivision of Villa Mella, has been working for the official’s family for many years, and according to elcaribe.com.do, Castillo revealed that he was an Antinarcotics (DNCD) agent.

Vásquez, 50, died as he received emergency attention in the Jiminián Cruz Clinic.

For decades Castillo has led the country’s fight against drug trafficking, and his denouncement of alleged corruption and links to the underworld in the administrations of the opposition PRD party has earned him many enemies.

During the late 1980s, Castillo was the target of a foiled plot on his life, which he attributed to leadership of the PRD.
