Odebrecht Energy's big gas plans for the Dominican Republic

The Brazilian construction company Odebrecht Energy has said it is exploring the feasibility of developing new natural gas fired power projects in the Dominican Republic.

Luiz Gabriel Todt, director of Odebrecht Energy, announced that it is currently in discussions with the Dominican government, regarding the connection of the proposed power station with the country’s national electrical system, according to a report in the Hoy newspaper.

One project under consideration could generate carbon credits or bonds for the Dominican Republic - incentives to reduce polluting emissions.

According to the news report, 26 per cent of electricity production in the Dominican Republic comes from the natural gas.

A report by Aes Group Dominica said it is estimated that gas fired capacity will rise to 33 per cent of total generation in next the two years.
