9th Anniversary of Flight 587 Crash

A memorial service in Queens on Friday will mark the ninth anniversary of the deadly crash of American Airlines Flight 587. The flight was on its way to the Dominican Republic after taking off from Kennedy International Airport.

Two-hundred-65 people were killed when the plane crashed in Belle Harbor. Five people on the ground were among those killed.

The horrific crash came only two months after the terror attacks of 9/11.
The National Transportation Safety Board found that the cause of the crash was the overuse of the plane's rudder to counter wake turbulence.

A granite memorial honoring the victims is located in neighboring Rockaway Parkway.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be on hand at Friday's service scheduled for 9 a.m. at Beach 116th Street and Rockaway Boulevard.
