US Coast Guard searches off Dominican coast for missing Greek sailor

The U.S. Coast Guard says it is searching the Atlantic Ocean for a Greek mariner who apparently fell overboard as his ship passed north of the Dominican Republic.

Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said Monday that a Florida-based plane and a cutter based in Puerto Rico are being used in the search.

The 24-year-old mariner from Greece apparently fell overboard on Saturday as his ship passed about 155 miles (250 kilometres) north of Samana in the Dominican Republic.

He was aboard the 748-foot (228-meter) Greek-flagged Velopoula. The ship was sailing from Aruba to Staten Island, New York, when the sailor disappeared.
